Cluster-Cluster Mergers

Some galaxy clusters appear very relaxed and settled, where as others appear very disturbed, as if undergoing major mergers with other clusters or massive groups of galaxies. We use features in the cluster satellite population to better constrain the merger properties and dynamical state using numerical simulations. In this way, we can better understand observed clusters with multi-object spectroscopy, deep imaging, x-ray features and radio relics.
Simulation of a 1:4 mass ratio merger between two clusters. Satellites are scattered out of the smaller cluster into a large extended feature, that exists for several gigayears following their first passage.
