Diffuse Light in Clusters & Groups

Clusters of galaxies are filled with a low-surface brightness, diffuse light component known as the intra-cluster light. Most of these stars originated in galaxies but were since liberated from their original hosts, and have finished up in the cluster. Using a sophisticated new approach, we model the complete mass build up history of cluster's, with high-resolution model galaxies inserted into a fully cosmological context. We study the various routes by which liberated stars end up in the cluster, and evaluate their relative importance and dependency on the merger growth history of the clusters.

matlasETG

A spectacular example of a massive galaxy in a group from the MATLAS survey (PI Pierre-Alain Duc). The deep imaging of the survey reveals shells, tidal plumes and streams, indicating that the main galaxy has absorbed and consumed one or more galaxies in merging events.
